CO2 Laser

CO2 Laser

Laser skin resurfacing is a technique used to treat wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, blemishes, uneven skin tone or texture, acne and accidental scars.. etc.  In essence, it is a procedure used to transform the aging face to a more youthful appearance.

Since the advent of laser resurfacing, a number of types of lasers have been used to produce the desired effect. For years, full ablation CO2 laser resurfacing was the gold standard for laser skin treatments. This laser produces energy in wavelengths that are strongly absorbed by water and, therefore, is well suited to skin applications.

Collagen is an essential part of the human body. It produces structure and support for the skin. Fractionated lasers cause thermal injury in the dermis, and that signals the body to produce more collagen in the damaged areas. Over time, this improves the texture, tone, and firmness of the skin’s surface, which are the results that most people want when they consider laser resurfacing treatments. So now that we know what fractionated lasers do, let’s take a look at how they work.

Co2 fractional laser is more aggressive than the Erbium laser in terms of depth of treatment and amount of thermal injury to the skin. CO2 ablative lasers are fractionated laser beams that create tiny microscopic holes in the epidermis to initiate the process of skin remodelling with the production of collagen. It improves the appearance of skin by not only removing the top layers of skin, but also by heating the deep dermis. This mechanism, in turn, stimulates fibroblasts to form new collagen and elastin which increases the turgor and thickness of the dermis resulting in healthier and younger looking skin.

Because of this, the CO2 is our first choice for patients wanting more dramatic results. It produces perforations in the skin rather than full coverage thermal damage, which greatly reduces the complication rate as well as the recovery period after treatment. This laser also has a down time which can last up to only a week.
